U.S. pork industry stepping up biosecurity to protect against PRRS

The U.S pork industry is taking steps to protect against Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS).

Dr. Andrèia Arruda says Ohio State University is conducting research on potential entryways  entry points for various strains of the virus.

“We are investigating the potential of protocols not being completely followed through,” she says. “We are really cautioning our producers to ask questions if they’re hiring external help to make sure that they are not contributing to the spread of this virus.”

She tells Brownfield biosecurity remains critical to herd health.

“This virus likes to attack the immune system, so it makes pigs sicker if they are already sick,” she says. “Producers should be taking care of the other conditions, making sure the environment is clean, the animals are vaccinated, and that you are treating sick animals early.”

Arruda says her team continue to conduct additional research to help protect long-term profitability.
