U.S. Senator says drought assistance is a top priority
A U.S. Senator from Ohio says providing drought assistance to those in need is a top priority.
Sherrod Brown says farmers need assistance now.
“One farmer told us that they can only get one and a half cuttings of hay pastures not growing well,” he says. “It means in the summer or early fall you’re already feeding hay to your cattle, which means prices are going to go up. You’re going to run into people potentially losing their farm.”
He tells Brownfield more needs to be done.
“We’ve got to get help to them and through the present law, we have the tools to help through the Farm Service Administration,” he says.
Three Ohio counties were declared a primary natural disaster area with 13 contiguous counties eligible for relief by the USDA FSA on Wednesday. Eligible counties include Carroll, Franklin, Tuscarawas, Columbiana, Coshocton, Delaware, Fairfield, Guernsey, Harrison, Holmes, Jefferson, Licking, Madison, Pickaway, Stark and Union.
