U.S. sheep, goat inventory rises
The number of U.S. sheep and goats increased over the past year.
The USDA says the sheep and lamb inventory was up slightly on the year, with gains in the breeding and market herds, ewes, and the lamb crop.
Wool production in 2024 was down 1% from 2023 due to a lower number of sheep and lambs being shorn with the value of that wool falling 9% to $32.1 million.
The goat and kid inventory climbed 1% with all categories moving higher.
The number of meat, milk, and all other goats were above the previous year, but angora goat numbers declined 3% and the 2024 kid crop was 1% smaller than 2023.
Mohair wool production was a half a million pounds with a total value of $3.24 million.
