“Unbelievable” soybean crush pace boosts domestic demand

Strong domestic processing demand continues to support soybean prices.

University of Minnesota Extension grain market economist Ed Usset calls the crushing pace “unbelievable.”

“I look at the crushing margins and they’ve been fantastic for a couple of years now, they continue to be fantastic even as new capacity has opened up over the last year. And I believe more is yet to come.”

He tells Brownfield soybean oil consumption is growing in part because it’s an important feedstock for biomass-based diesel.

“The last time I looked, the December Board crush was somewhere around $2.60 a bushel. Keep in mind, this is a crush margin that might’ve been a buck a bushel ten years ago or less.”

Earlier this month the USDA raised its 2026/2027 soybean crush estimate 30 million bushels to 2.780 billion bushels.
