Uniform emergence key for winter wheat success

A technical service representative with BASF says winter wheat seeding is progressing across the country.

Curtis Rainbolt says areas that’ve seen recent rains are set up well.

“The most ideal conditions are some moisture in the soil where you can get that seed down at a uniform depth, typically like to see it around an inch and a half,” he says, “and have moisture to get a quick crop out of the ground.”

He tells Brownfield that many farmers chasing high yields are utilizing seed treatments to protect from early-season pathogens.

“There’s really no substitute for getting that crop out of the ground uniformly and quickly, so having a quality seed treatment can help get that crop up uniformly and out of the ground.”

Rainbolt says early-season crop protection is just as beneficial in wheat as in other row crops.
