University of Illinois confirms first U.S. case of glufosinate-resistant waterhemp, raising concerns for Midwest farmers

Aaron Hager - professor of weed science, with glyphosate-resistant water hemp in a soybean field on the UI South Farms.

A weed scientist at the University of Illinois says the first case of glufosinate resistance in waterhemp has been confirmed in the United States.

Dr. Aaron Hager tells Brownfield, “We have confirmed glufosinate resistance, or resistance to things like Liberty, Liberty Ultra, and Interline, in about four populations of waterhemp here in Illinois. So now it’s evolved resistance to herbicides from eight different chemical classes.”

He says it’s not a surprising development considering the increased reliance on glufosinate in recent years, as other chemicals have lost efficacy.

“We need to do everything we can to try to optimize the performance.”  He says, “Bright sunshine, high humidity, high temperatures, generally speaking, around 20 gallons of carrier to the acre, and medium-sized droplets. All those things really go toward enhancing the ability of glufosinate to perform as it really should.”

Hager says not all glufosinate failures are due to resistance, but farmers need to limit waterhemp seed production to reduce the likelihood of future generations developing it.

  • We need to get back to being natural, Monsanto destroyed all of our food supply, our crops, contaminated everything! I know its hard to make enough food for a large population like we have but the ancient people did it some how. Its time we reverse the damage we have done and really bring back nature and strive for organic natural food again.

  • No surprise here! First, no such thing as Evolution. Good science is unable to replicate and has never observed a single case of evolution. Good science dies agree with
Speciation and adaptation processes. History is replete
With human resistance to bacterial abd viral medications
Such as Penicillin…due to medical shotgun medicating
    By physicians.

  • We sprayed our pumpkin patch this past year with farm works 41% Glyphosate. Half of field died great , half didn’t. I thought it was odd, so I mixed up another batch and resprayed that half again with zero effect on it . The weeds looked like the waterhemp photo in your article. This is the first time Ive seen this happen. I live in Michigan about 30 minutes east of Lansing. Those weeds are still standing in the patch. Feel free to contact me if I can help in any way, if you need those plants for examination, I’d be happy to send them to you. I’m now going to contact the MSU ag department to see if the need them to.

  • I have an issue with what might be Roundup resist Johnson Grass I have a field that has been in corn for a number of years because of deer predation. The last few times that field was in beans deer had virtually destroyed the crop.
For the last 3 years, Johnson Grass has steadily become so bad that it looks as if it had not been sprayed at all. I even had the field representative from Willard Chemical look at it as well as a couple other troublesome areas on the farm.

  • I really don’t like saying this but Americans are not very intelligent, ( i.e.) Scientists , Farmer’s etc. First of all we’ve let Asians buy properties used for Farming and now we have non,-native species being spread throughout the land. The worst part is the use of PESTICIDES ON OUR FOODS ( VEGETABLES THAT THEN ARE SPREAD THROUGHOUT OUR MEATS BY FEED FOR BEEF , CHICKEN , PORK ETC.) THINK back 100 , 200 even farther back our foods weren’t being poisoned with PESTICIDES., people actually went out and tended the fields, pulling the weeds before they went to seed , therefore elementating the weed taking over . And now no one goes out and actually works the fields like they use too.
Now because of what Americans call PROGRESS, I call it Lazyness they are POISENING PEOPLE . THINK CPMPARED TO 100 ,200 AS FAR BACK AS YOU LIKE BEFORE PESTISIDES HOW MANY CHILDREN WERE BORN WITH AUTISM AND DEFORMATIES AS WELL. AS OTHER DISORDERS. . I’M NOT BEING RACIST HERE , BUT I HAVE 1 QUESTION , DO THE CHINESE PEOPLE USE PESTICIDES ?? AS far as I have seen they pretty much work their fields with humans. The CHINESE people are not lazy and they work harder than the American people who depend on machinery and POISONS THAT THEY TELL US ARE SAFE FOR US TO CONSUME. PERSONALLY I DON’T BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE. THE PESTICIDES POISON THE LAND , THE WATER AND ANIMALS , INCLUDING US . AMERICA 🇺🇸 IS A JOKE , WE HAVE BEEN FED LIES FOR OVER A CENTURY AND NOW IT’S NOT ONLY THE ELDERLY IT’S OUR CHILDREN AND OUR CHILDREN’S CHILDREN WHO ARE SUFFERING. AMERICA MEEDS TO GET OFF THEIR BUTTS AND RAISE A FIT , GET OFF YOU’RE BUTTS AND GO TO WORK , GO BACK TO THE DAY’S BEFORE PESTICIDES BEFORE THE LAND WATER AND OUR FOOD BEGAN BEING POISONED. THANK YOU AND MAY GOD BLESS US EVERYONE . HAPPY NEW YEAR

  • Quit relying on chemicals is a means to no end….. it keeps proving this to be true and then the runoff harms us is humans and animals alike… Beatles aphids and leaf cutters water striders eat water hemp…
Releasing beneficial insects (biocontrols) to control invasive species is crucial because they offer targeted, long-term solutions, reducing environmental harm from broad-spectrum chemical pesticides that kill pollinators, disrupt ecosystems, pose health risks, and can lead to pest resistance, whereas biocontrols are sustainable, cost-effective, protect biodiversity, and create self-sustaining systems

  • Great, GMO frankenfood and industrial agriculture has to end if humanity and life on earth is to continue. We poison our environment to enrich corporate farming practices that emphasize more yields instead of nutrient dense foods. How much glyphosate and other industrial farm chemicals do we have to fight off diseases from and take to our early graves? Organic and regenerative farming is our only sane future for our children. Let’s get past these greedy corporations and their corporate captured governments and demand clean nutritious foods.

  • Y’all are seriously messed up, go back to organic. Forget the chemicals. How about whoever wrote this drinks the glufosinate.

  • I love how specifically they tell you how to poison your acres.

Wish they were as clear about things that might actually benefit us as a whole.

  • Here’s a thought, stop using poison and go back to true eco friendly farming…you can grow more and have healthier ecosystems, less cancer, and fewer instances of earth proving she will outlast humans….unless we vlow her up of course
