University’s new dairy plant is operational

After more than ten years of planning and fundraising, the new University of Wisconsin-River Falls dairy pilot processing plant is a reality.

Professor Steve Kelm says the new Wuethrich Family-Grassland Dairy Center of Excellence was a long time coming, and the nine-million dollar facility opened in October. “This has been a project that has had lots of ups and downs, but thankfully, we got it across the finish line.”

Kelm says the milk from the college’s Mann Valley Farm is now being used by students and researchers to create dairy foods in the facility. “The first batches of cheese curd have been made. Ice cream is going to be the next thing to come online. We’re not at full capacity yet, but by the end of the semester, we should be knocking on the door of that.”

Several dairy and other ag-related businesses contributed 5.2 million toward the 6,000 square foot processing facility.
