US and Japan expected to sign “limited” trade deal today

President Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Abe are expected to sign a limited trade deal in New York today.

Japanese officials are reportedly requesting an exemption from tariffs on autos. There is some concern that if trump moves forward with those tariffs Japan might retaliate with duties on U.S. farm goods. That request is apparently holding up the final stages of the trade talks.

The potential agreement is said to be crucial for US agriculture, but some US lawmakers say a limited deal will not even out the opportunities lost for agriculture from pulling out of the TPP agreement.
