US announces $200 billion tariffs on Chinese goods
President Trump is following through on his vow to impose additional tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods.
U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer says he is supportive of the new tariffs. In a statement, he said that the U.S. has been clear about the changes that need to happen, but no move has been made by China to address its unfair trading practices.
Many ag groups have said they are concerned about the tariffs. Trade tensions increased when tariffs on $34 billion worth of Chinese goods went into effect on July 6, and China retaliated immediately with equal tariffs on US goods.
The proposed list of Chinese goods that could face 10 percent tariffs include meat, fruit, vegetables, and potatoes.
Bloomberg reports that the U.S. and China are imposing tariffs on some items that aren’t even traded between the two countries, including live trout from China. Blomberg says live trout hasn’t been shipped since the early 1990s.
The USTR is seeking public comment and will hold a public hearing on the new tariffs.
