U.S. joins lawsuit against Westland Hallmark

The U.S. Department of Justice is joining the Humane Society of the United States in a lawsuit against the Westland Hallmark Meat Company. That’s the company which owned theChino, California slaughterhouse involved in the largest meat recall in U.S. history last year. The suit charges Westland Hallmark with defrauding the government for certifying the meat sold to the national school lunch program came from cows which were treated humanely. Undercover video from HSUSshowed downed cows being mistreated at the plant. That video lead to the plant being closed down and a change in U.S. policy for downer cows. The suit seeks $150 million from the company.
