USAPEEC president says layer and turkey flocks continue to rebound following HPAI outbreaks

The president and CEO of the USA Poultry and Egg Export Council says that reported cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza have slowed in recent weeks.  But, Greg Tyler tells Brownfield, “The outbreaks are going to continue, I don’t think we’re going to see a slowdown on that.”

He says the layer and turkey industries have suffered the most, and it takes those sectors longer to rebound. “The layer industry has been decimated by it, but we are seeing recovery on that now, which is a positive sign,” he says. “The turkey industry is the same way.  They were hit very hard, especially in the Midwest states, South Dakota, and Minnesota, and they are coming back as well.”

Tyler says the economic losses have been substantial. “From February 2022 to March 2025, we have over $9 billion in losses total by the industry,” he says.  “The export losses are around $2.3 billion.”

He says the industry is optimistic that ongoing trade negotiations will eliminate non-tariff barriers and enhance global trade opportunities.
