USDA: 8,140 farmers markets in the U.S. in 2019

The USDA says there were 8,140 farmers markets operating in the U.S. last year. The primary months for most of those markets were June through October and 52.4% had Saturday as their most common day of operation.

Nearly all, 99.6%, had fruits and vegetables as the most common category for food, followed by condiments and sauces at 94.1%, bread and baking goods at 90.9%, plants at 86.5%, and meat, seafood, and eggs at 84.5%. 84.7% of markets had locally grown labeling.

Of the 4,076 markets that accepted Federal Nutrition Programs, 78.7% accepted the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, while of the 4,352 vendors and producers that accepted Federal Nutrition Programs, 66.7% accepted payment under the Women, Infants, and Children plan and 66.3% accepted payment under the Seniors Farmers Market Nutrition program.

916 households shopped at farmers markets on an average day, spending $14,457 per market.
