USDA cotton estimate up slightly, rice steady

The USDA’s cotton production guess is up from October and rice is unchanged.

The 2024 upland cotton crop is pegged at 13.71 million bales, 25,000 more than a month ago on a slight upward revision for yield to 779 pounds per acre and no change to harvested area at 8.443 million acres.

For 2023, upland production was 11.75 million bales with an average yield of 895 pounds per acre and harvested area of 6.302 million acres.

Production for all types of rice was left at 219.812 million hundredweight weight with the USDA delaying post-harvest changes to yield and harvested area, left at 7,590 pounds per acre and 2.896 million acres, respectively.

A year ago, rice production totaled 218.291 million hundredweight with an average yield of 7,649 pounds per acre and harvested area of 2.854 million acres.

Domestic cotton ending stocks were higher at 4.3 million bales and rice ending stocks were up to 46.7 million hundredweight, largely due to cuts in export demand.

The USDA’s next round of supply, demand, and production numbers is out December 10th.
