USDA maintains large 2024 corn, soybean crop estimates
The USDA has made modest month-to-month adjustments to its 2024 corn and soybean production estimates.
As of October 1st, corn is pegged at 15.2 billion bushels, up less than 1% from September on a fractional increase in the average yield, 0.2 higher at 183.8 bushels per acre, but down 1% from 2023 on a reduction in harvested area, now seen at 82.71 million acres.
For 2023, production was 15.341 billion bushels with an average yield of 177.3 bushels per acre on harvested area of 86.506 million acres.
Soybeans are projected at a record 4.582 billion bushels, slightly less than last month on a minor cut to average yield, 0.1 lower to 53.1 bushels per acre, but 10% more than a year ago based on current yield and harvested area numbers. Harvested area is now estimated at 86.271 million acres.
Last year, soybean production was 4.162 billion bushels with an average yield of 50.6 bushels per acre on harvested area of 82.271 million acres.
The corn and soybean harvests are ongoing, and these numbers will change between now and the preliminary official totals in January.
The USDA’s next round of supply, demand, and production estimates is out November 8th.
