USDA reduces 2024 cotton, rice crop expectations

The USDA has lowered its expectations for 2024 U.S. cotton and rice production modestly.

Upland cotton is seen at just under 14 billion bales, 4% below August due to a reduction in yield, now pegged at 794 pounds per acre, but still up 19% on the year thanks to larger acreage totals with 2024 harvested area expected to be 8.443 million acres.

For 2023, upland cotton production was 11.75 million bales with an average yield of 895 pounds per acre and harvested area of 6.302 million acres.

Rice production is estimated at 219.749 million hundredweight, most of that long grain, 1.012 million less than last month on a lower yield guess, now at 7,588 pounds per acre, but up 1.458 million from last year due to a slight increase in acreage with this year’s harvested area at 2.896 million acres.

A year ago, rice totaled 218.291 million hundredweight with an average yield of 7,649 pounds per acre and harvested area of 2.854 million acres.

New crop cotton ending stocks were lower on cuts to production and unaccounted for supplies, while new crop rice ending stocks were higher due to a larger old crop carryout and smaller domestic and residual use.

The USDA’s next round of supply, demand, and production estimates is out October 11th.
