USDA to operate National Bio and Agri-Defense lab

The National Bio and Agri-defense Facility, or N-BAF, will be under the umbrella of the USDA when completed.

The top-level secure scientific facility now being built near Kansas State University is under the guidance of the Department of Homeland Security, but Homeland Security’s William Brian told a ceremony at USDA, “We’ll be handing our baby over to somebody else once it’s fully grown and mature.”

Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue says the lab will work with African Swine Fever, Foot and Mouth Disease, Anthrax, and more. “Some of the nastiest kind of stuff you have to deal with and we need to put it in a safe place, and that’s exactly what we intend on doing.”

The one-and-a-quarter billion-dollar facility scheduled to open in the spring of 2021.
