USDA’s FSIS modernizes egg products inspection

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service is modernizing egg product inspections to be consistent with current requirements in meat and poultry inspections.

FSIS Administrator Paul Kiecker says this is a significate milestone in modernizing the inspection system.

Under the new rule, federally inspected egg product plants will be able to tailor a food safety system that best fits their facility and equipment. Inspectors will also visit plants once per shift.

FSIS will assume regulatory authority over egg substitutes and freeze-dried egg products to help enhance the existing food safety system.

This is the first update since Congress passed the Egg Products Inspection Act 50 years ago.
