Used machinery demand remains strong as December buying picks up

An auction specialist says December is a busy month for used machinery sales.

“Now we’re in the busy farm retirement excess machinery market,” said Mark Stock, co-founder of Big Iron Auctions.

Stock says used equipment is currently trending steady to higher.

“The combine market reached its lows in June of this last year and they’ve been going higher ever since,” he said. “Part of that is because it’s hard to find a new one. The manufacturers have slowed down the manufacturing of anything new.”

He tells Brownfield it’s a similar situation for tractors.

“If you don’t have a lot of new stuff sitting on the dealer yards then people start looking to good quality used equipment,” Stock said. “Some of these retirement sales we’ve had have really nice low-hour equipment because they’ve made some money the last few years.”

Stock says in many cases, used equipment buyers will sell their previous tractors and combines to help offset some of the purchasing costs.

He spoke to Brownfield at the 2025 NAFB Convention in Kansas City.
