Using aerial imagery to build crop management efficiency

A regional agronomist with AgriGold says aerial imagery technology can be a valuable investment for farmers looking to enhance their crop management strategies.

Western Illinois based Brett Leahr says it can help farmers identify which areas need to be monitored more closely during the growing season.

“With differences in emergence, you can plan a replant scenario if needed based on these tools,” he says. “They give you data on population based on their camera interfaces and just having the ability to know what’s going on all your fields.”

He tells Brownfield utilizing collected data could optimize mid-season applications.

“We can look at these fields and see the growth,” he says. “We could go in season, make applications, have good timing and we get our most return investment when we’re most efficient. Having these different tools, different filters on the cameras, we can really see differences in the field.”

Leahr says investing in new technologies can give farmers a higher return on their investment by boosting productivity.
