Using risk management to strengthen the ag supply chain

A new report from Purdue University’s Digital Innovation in Agri-Food Systems Laboratory is highlighting the role risk management plays in strengthening the ag supply chain.

DIAL Ventures research manager Lourival Monaco says farmers are part of a larger supply chain and they need to be proactive in their risk management strategies.

“If they’re unsure of how they’re going to produce those products or there’s going be pressure from regulations to produce carbon neutral products, farmers can be ahead of the game,” he says. “They can prepare themselves and create the strategy so when that pressure gets to them they’re ready for it.”

He tells Brownfield improving productivity and sustainability can help farmers and the ag industry stay ahead of the demand curve.

“We have the safest, cheapest, and probably the best food system in the world,” he says. “The only way to continue to do that is to continue to look for efficiency, continue to look for best practices, and continue to protect our farmers.”

Monaco says finding ways to better address challenges in the ag supply chain can help it better navigate any future disruptions.
