USMCA review aims to strengthen U.S. farm exports

The USDA Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Ag Affairs says he’s confident the review of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement can strengthen top U.S. export markets.

“Adding new access is the goal here, not reducing access for U.S. producers.”

Luke Lindberg tells Brownfield there aren’t simple fixes in USMCA negotiations for agriculture, but there are obvious issues that need addressed.

“Canada’s implementation, or lack thereof, of the dairy provisions that we agreed to.”

Lindberg says when he traveled to Mexico last fall, President Claudia Schienbaum (Shine-bomb) made it clear the biotech corn issue was in the past and it’s no longer an obstacle.

“That will not be revisited,” he says.

The U.S. and Mexico are scheduled to meet to discuss the USMCA again this week.
