USMCA review could shape future of U.S. pork exports

The executive director of the Nebraska Pork Producers Association says any disruption to the USMCA agreement could devastate the industry.

Seth Mitchell says maintaining market access is critical. “We want no new tariff barriers for pork and more access in those countries. Zero tariff entry and it’s really quite simple. USMCA has been one of the greatest success stories in terms of trade deals for not just pork, but for all of agriculture.”

He tells Brownfield nearly half of U.S. pork is exported to Canada and Mexico. “That trade, in addition, to trade globally accounts for $66 per head back into producers’ pockets for every pig sold in the United States. That’s a tremendous value add back to U.S. pork producers.”

Negotiations are ongoing between the countries and are expected to meet again in September.
