USMCA review scheduled for 2026
When the United States-Mexico-Canada agreement is reviewed in July 2026, new faces will be at the table. The CEO of the US Meat Export Federation says the USMCA has been really good for trade between the three nations overall.
But, Dal Halstrom says there are some specific areas that will need to be addressed. One of those is the GMO corn issue. “We’re not in a corn industry, but we kind of are because it’s the biggest input into beef and pork production,” he says. “That’s an area of concern, but one that can be worked out eventually.”
As for beef and pork trade, Halstrom tells Brownfield business between the two countries is very intertwined. “I’d say we’re hitting on all cylinders,” he says. “The reliance that the Mexican industry has on beef and pork from the U.S. and our reliance on them as a customer is one of those situations that really works to our advantage.”
