USMEF CEO says outlook for beef remains strong
The CEO of the US Meat Export Federation says the outlook for beef is strong heading into 2025.
Dan Halstrom tells Brownfield beef exports are ending 2024 on a high note.
“We’re going to be very close to last year’s volume, but we’re going to be up about 5% in value, which would be our second largest year ever,” he says.
He says demand remains strong in Japan, Korea and Mexico, while dramatic growth is happening in Central America, Southeast Asia and the Philippines.
“I think that combination of some of the more established markets along with some of these emerging markets, is really exciting on a beef side, even though our supply is a bit limited with higher prices, but they continue to buy,” he says.
Halstrom says USMEF hopes to maintain demand at higher prices by educating buyers on potential alternative products and cooking styles.
“We’ve had a lot of success on a beef side this past two years with the round. What can we do with the inside round versus using a chuck roll, what can we do with an outside round flat versus using a hanging tender,” he says.
Brownfield interviewed Halstrom at the Nebraska Cattlemen convention in Kearney, Nebraska.
