Variability at harvest for soybeans, corn, sunflowers in NW MN
A farmer in northwest Minnesota says there’s been some good soybeans this fall, but there’s also variability in fields caused by early season moisture.
Kevin Capistran tells Brownfield “I went to my next field and it was yielding more in the mid-40 bushels/acre. I was thinking, wow, it’s a disappointment after cutting something that was 65 bushels/acre when we started. We’re good up here, but fairly variable. The soybeans left to cut were because they drowned out early and we had to replant.”
He says the corn is going to vary, too.
“The corn we’re in right now is some of the better grain that held its nitrogen and I think it will be good,” says Capistran. “I think there are other fields with sandier soil that didn’t get top dressed and that nitrogen went away with the June rains. It will be more variables.”
Capistran says they didn’t plant sunflowers this year, but there’s been some sunflower harvest in the area that have yielded well.
