Variable corn in northeast Missouri

A technical agronomist with Channel Seed says the corn in northeast Missouri is variable, based on the recent rains.

Steven Troesser says some tasseling corn is underwater due to recent excessive rains and localized, flash flooding in eastern Missouri.

“The most rain was in eastern Audrain County in through Montgomery, Lincoln and some heavy rain in Callaway County. There are also some bottom ground that has some corn tasseling in it, but you can’t see the tassels due to the water. There’s water coming up off the small tributaries as well as growers south of there are concerned about what’s happening with the Missouri River.”

But he says the right amount of rain for corn before, during and right after tasseling can benefit corn.

“We’re determining corn length in the 3-week period and that rain was right in the middle of that.”

Troesser says he hasn’t seen many corn diseases yet in northeast Missouri this growing season, but farmers should be scouting fields, especially if there’s been recent moisture.
