Vilsack hopeful GREET update for SAF is near

U.S. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says he’s hopeful updates to the GREET modeling used to measure transportation emissions for sustainable aviation fuel will be announced this month.

“Well I am particularly hopeful that we get some direction from Treasury in the next several weeks, sometime during the month of April. That’s the goal, (and) certainly our goal.”

The transportation emission guidelines for SAF were expected to be announced last month.

He says the initial framework will probably focus on 40B.

“Which is the first rule that governs the production of sustainable aviation fuel in years 2023 and 2024. I think it will send a strong signal about the importance of sustainable climate-smart agriculture practices being beneficial to ethanol and to other biofuels making the grade, if you will.”

The 40B tax credit incentivizes the production of sustainable aviation fuel that achieves a lifecycle greenhouse gas reduction of at least 50 percent compared to petroleum-based jet fuel.
