Vilsack says U.S. dairy sales helped by sustainability efforts

U.S. Dairy Export Council President Tom Vilsack says American farmers have an advantage in certain foreign markets.

Tom Vilsack tells Brownfield there are countries that are just now learning about U.S. animal welfare and sustainability efforts. He says it’s a marketing opportunity for the dairy industry. “Nobody has an international animal welfare standard. No one else besides the Canadians can claim that they’ve produced more milk with fewer greenhouse gas emissions, so these are two really important considerations in the global marketplace.”

Vilsack says many countries including Indonesia are paying attention, as their customers want more environmentally sustainable sources for their food.

Vilsack spoke to Brownfield at World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin.
