Walker might appoint Harsdorf Ag Secretary

Wisconsin Senators Jerry Petrowski and Sheila Harsdorf at Ag Committee hearing

Wisconsin might have a new Agriculture Secretary as early as Thursday.  Governor Scott Walker’s office would neither confirm nor deny to Brownfield that 10th District State Senator Sheila Harsdorf from Beldenville will be named to succeed retired Secretary Ben Brancel.

Walker’s office told Brownfield they are planning either a statement or press release tomorrow about the open Secretary position but could not give details.  The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel newspaper reports three sources close to the Governor say Harsdorf will get the appointment.

If Sheila Harsdorf becomes Secretary of the Department of Ag, Trade, and Consumer Protection, she would vacate a seat she’s held for seventeen years.

Harsdorf’s brother Jim Harsdorf also served as the 10th District Senator, and as Ag Secretary under Governor Scott McCallum from 2001 until 2003.

Ben Brancel retired after the Wisconsin State Fair.
