Walmart, PepsiCo accelerating regenerative ag supply chain

Walmart and PepsiCo have announced they will invest $120 million in regenerative practices with farmers in the U.S. and Canada.

AgAmerica’s Curt Covington says many farmers he works with are part of the supply chain for Walmart and other large retailers.

“It has become a bit of a retailer-driven business,” he shares.  “The farmers really are in a position where they have to respond to the needs, the requests, and the desires of the retailers who tell them, you know, effectively this is what we want.”

He tells Brownfield companies requiring regenerative practices should make larger investments with farmer suppliers.

“If you look at that number and say there are two million farmers in the United States, that means they would each get $60 over the next seven years.”

Covington expects regenerative agriculture to work better for small and medium-sized producers who can adapt faster to change.

Walmart and PepsiCo say the efforts will improve soil health and water quality on more than two million acres of farmland.
