Warm weather fuels speedy harvest

Dry conditions are advancing harvest ahead of average in Michigan.

Great Lakes Region Manager Andy Bernia with ACH Seeds tells Brownfield early sugarbeet digging across the Thumb is going well even with some yield losses.

“Back in August, the numbers looked fantastic and they thought they might have too large of a crop,” he shares. “They were actually looking at maybe leaving at least some of the beets in the field, but with the dry weather, that’s kind of stalled out and helped us with sugar content. We’re going to need a rain before we start permanent pile to rehydrate the beets so that they are in better condition.”

The USDA says sugarbeets are 22 percent harvested and rated 50 percent good to excellent.

Michigan’s corn crop is rated 58 percent good to excellent with 85 percent mature. Corn harvest for grain is 18 percent complete and silage harvest is 87 percent finished.

Soybeans are 97 percent dropping leaves with 59 percent of the crop good to excellent and 40 percent harvested. Winter wheat planting is 44 percent complete and 15 percent emerged.

Dry beans are 94 percent harvested while the fourth cutting of alfalfa is 61 percent finished.

The warm weather has sped up apple harvest for many varieties and caused some challenges for growers.
