Water protections one step closer for Indiana farmers
The bill tackling water rights in Indiana has taken the next steps of advancing in the General Assembly.
Director of policy engagement for Indiana Farm Bureau Caitlin Smith says the Indiana House unanimously passed Senate Bill 28.
“That bill is still conference committee eligible,” she says. “We’re going to continue with filing a concurrence and really hoping to get it to the governor’s desk for signature in the next week or so.”
She tells Brownfield water rights remain a priority for the organization.
“Farmers need the resource and as economic development continues here in Indiana, those are also heavy water users,” she says. “Senate Bill 28 provides an avenue for farmers if they experiences any negative impacts from that, there is now a process in place.”
Indiana’s 2025 legislative session wraps up on April 29th.
