Weather extremes a threat to corn
The maturing corn crop could be vulnerable to weather extremes.
Syngenta agronomic service rep Logan Dinkla says a wet and blustery growing season raises the risk for lodging.
“We’ve had a few wind events recently, and we’re known to get some here in the future. But with the moisture we’ve had there’s potential for maybe we’re running short on nitrogen and our stalks start to cannibalize, or we’re kind of open for the risk of different stalk rots or even crown rot.”
Speaking to Brownfield at a Grow More Experience plot tour near Slater in central Iowa Friday, he said growers will need to be checking stalk integrity in the weeks leading up to harvest.
