Weather forecasts matter

Weather is one of the variables that can make or break a farming operation, but it is one thing that is out of their control.

Keith Alverson farms in eastern South Dakota.  He says even with the availability of long-term forecasts, it is still difficult to plan, and most of the time they just have to be flexible with Mother Nature.  “It’s something that maybe with our irrigation we keep a closer eye on that and maybe go a little earlier,” he says.  “We’re at the mercy of the weather and there is only so much we can do.  You can only plan to hit the windows when you can to get your field operations done.”

Illinois farmer Judi Graff says it’s about being as prepared as you can for any weather condition.  “If you’re lucky enough to have irrigation – you’ve got money in the bank there,” she says.  “You just basically have to take what you can get when it comes to weather.”

Both Alverson and Graff participate in Get Growing, Brownfield’s spring series of Cab Conversations.
