Weather has impacted northern Ohio field work progress

A northwestern Ohio farmer says he expects to start his planting season late this week.

Kyle Brown says recent rains have impacted field work progress.

“We did a little bit of tillage work, touching up some things,” he says. “We’re mainly no-till, but it’s drying out nicely. Not having the winds that we’ve had here lately has been a nice change.”

He tells Brownfield he’s implementing a new conservation practice this year.

“We are trying some strip-till this year,” he says. “I’m looking forward to that and have heard a lot of good things about it. I had a guy come in and do it for me last fall. Probably a quarter or less of our corn acres will be strip-till to try it out and see how it goes.”

Brown raises corn and soybeans in Wyandot County.

According to the latest USDA crop progress and conditions report, two percent of Ohio’s corn crop has been planted.
