Weed challenges continue

A southwestern Indiana farmer says a wet start to the growing season has created additional weed challenges.

Ben Kron says resistance has been a problem.

“We have issues over in our area with getting rid of water hemp and pig weed,” he says. “We’ve really struggled getting some of those killed. Even our neighbors have ended up resulting in using field cultivators just to completely take the weeds out to be able to get them killed.”

He tells Brownfield he continues to look for a solution.

“We’re trying different herbicides, different residuals, and as many things as we possibly can try before we have to resort back to cultivators,” he says. “We’re going to have to get our row crop cultivators back out if we can’t get all these weeds killed and held off for the year.”

Kron raises corn and soybeans in Vanderburgh County.
