Weed management remains in full swing

A crop protection specialist says many farmers are dealing with weeds that are increasingly difficult to control.

Lynn Justesen, technical services lead for UPL, says weed management efforts are still in full swing across the country.

“We’re doing our second and third trips on soybeans now,” he said. “We have some corn that will probably still need additional cleanups, so we’re trying to figure out systems and approaches to try and help growers ensure we do our best we can to control weeds.”

Speaking to Brownfield at the 2026 Ag PhD Field Day in South Dakota, he said weed pressure can impact yields differently from farm to farm, and problems can escalate quickly.

“It could be maybe as little as five bushel and maybe even less,” he said. “But the problem is if all that stuff goes to seed, now we’ve built a seed bank and that seed bank – now next year instead of 1,000 weeds to fight we now have a million weeds to fight.”

Justesen says he recommends UPL’s Intrava DX herbicide in corn to help combat resistance.
