Western IL crops showing “awesome potential”
A western Illinois agronomist says crops in his area are doing well despite some challenges.
Rich DeSchepper, agronomy sales & marketing manager with West Central FS in Knox County, says it’s been a year of weather extremes.
“We’ve been fortunate to get rains when we needed to, and we had a dry period to help root development early.” He says, “We cry at the time, you know, hoping we’ll get rain, but it’s doing great things. We’re getting plenty of moisture as you can see, the crop looks good.”
He tells Brownfield excess rains have had an impact, especially on soybeans.
“They look good now, but they had a struggle period at times.” He says, “We probably had a little more rain than they wanted. Didn’t see it as much in corn. Actually, the corn overall we thought was pretty uniform. From what I’ve looked at so far, the potential is awesome.”
DeSchepper says both crops need adequate moisture through the grain fill period to reach that potential.
Brownfield spoke with DeSchepper at the recent Innerplant CropVoice Field Day near Galesburg, IL.
