Western Illinois harvest wrapping up

A region manager for Wyffels Hybrids says a bountiful corn harvest is nearing completion in west central Illinois.

Eli Klokkenga says the dry weather has pushed harvest pace.

“The majority of growers in central Illinois are very happy with their corn.”  He says, “There’s a lot of individual field records, and a lot of very good to excellent corn, but there is more variability out there than we were anticipating.”

He tells Brownfield the crop’s quick dry down is likely the cause of that variability.

“I’m hearing grain moisture is anywhere from 12 to 16 now coming out of the fields, which when you’re drying a point a day, what that quick dry down will do that will accentuate any little thing that’s wrong with that corn plant,” he says.

Klokkenga says another unusual aspect of the fall was most farmers in his area fully completed soybean harvest, before beginning corn harvest.
