Wet Wisconsin fields might mean adjusting nutrient management plans

A nutrient management specialist says farmers changing crops or filing prevent plant claims might also have to update their nutrient management plans.

Andrea Topper with Wisconsin’s Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection tells Brownfield many farmers applied manure last fall expecting to plant corn this spring, but wet fields prevented that. “In this situation, if you were planning to plant corn and you applied fall manure, you could see, potentiall, and over-application of nitrogen if you were going to be switching your crop from corn to soybeans.”

Topper says many fields will now have too much nitrogen for the new crop, and Wisconsin’s nutrient management software, Snap Plus, will show a red box indicating the over-application.  She says be honest and document what happened. “Thatt is leading documentation for our nutrient management plan reviewers, whether they be at the county land conservation departments or on the other side of things, in the DNR world with CAFO permitting, just to have that message there so that when people are reviewing nutrient management plans, they can see, yes, okay, we understand what happened here.”

Topper says when weather alters the planting plans like this, there will be no reprimands or compliance penalties for over-applying nitrogen.

Wisconsin farmers and agronomists can take part in one of six upcoming 2024 Nutrient Management Regional Meetings. These meetings will include discussion on the updates to the Snap Plus nutrient management program.
