Wheat harvest wrapping up in Kansas

A southeast Kansas farmer says most of his crops have exceeded his expectations this year.

Ben Bellar says his soft red winter wheat was a pleasant surprise even with some freeze damage. “We were right at 5p to 60 pounds, which we’re pretty happy with. We can consistently see some 56 pound test weight wheat, but overall, we were way happier than expected. We were expecting a pretty big yield loss.”

The USDA says wheat harvest is 91 percent complete.

He tells Brownfield soybeans are all over the board. “The really early planted soybeans actually look pretty good. There are lot of farmers in the area due to rains are trying to get some first crop soybeans. We had to replant some first crop and double crop beans. We are done at this point.”

The USDA says the crop is rated 67 percent good-to-excellent.

Bellar says corn has wrapped up pollination and is setting ears.

The USDA says corn condition is rated 64 percent good-to-excellent, and 41 percent is silking.
