Wheat tour finds improved Kansas crop, but fewer acres

The first day of the Hard Red Winter Wheat Tour through northern Kansas on Tuesday produced a yield estimate of nearly 47 bushels per acre, up about nine bushels from last year.

The Nebraska and Colorado estimates also came in around 47 bushels per acre.

One wheat tour veteran said he noticed a lot fewer wheat acres this year in the northern tier of counties in Kansas. Winter wheat acres in Kansas are estimated at seven million, the lowest since 1910.

The tour continues today in western and southern areas of Kansas and northern Oklahoma.
