Where are farmers cutting expenses?
Two Ohio farmers are taking a hard look at where they can cut costs ahead of the upcoming growing season.
Northeast Ohio farmer Owen Niese says one of the biggest costs for his farm is fertilizer.
“My total input costs are about half of what they are,” he says. “Due to the increased fertilizer costs, I made the decision to put out twice as many acres of wheat and cut back on my corn acres.”
Northwest Ohio farmer Patty Mann says last year’s drought disaster impacted decisions on her farm for this year.
“Our overall average for soybeans was reduced about 20 bushels to the acre,” she says. “It was a huge loss. We purchased some lower cost hybrids of corn to get our corn and bean seed costs down.”
After the difficulties they faced in 2024, both farmers say they’re optimistic for a successful and profitable crop in 2025.
