White House releases supply chain improvement plan

The Biden administration has announced a series of actions he hopes will get supply chains moving better, especially through the ports.

The administration said Tuesday the Port of Savannah, which leads the nation in containerized agricultural exports, would be able to reallocate more than eight million dollars to create five nearby container yards, freeing up dock space and speeding up the flow of goods.

The administration also plans to award 240 million in grant funding within 45 days to modernize ports and the marine highways and prioritize expansion at key ports of entry within 90 days.

The federal government would also call for new data standards for goods movement.

The proposed changes are mostly funded through the infrastructure bill awaiting Biden’s signature.

The White House says Only four U.S. ports are among the top 50 busiest ports in the world, with no U.S. port is in the top 10, and many U.S. ports have bridge or depth limitations that restrict their ability to receive the larger, post-Panamax vessels that are the future of ocean shipping.
