Why E15 is missing from latest farm bill

The U.S. House Agriculture Committee is scheduled to begin markup of a new five-year farm bill Monday afternoon, but year-round E15 won’t be mentioned.

“Not our jurisdiction, that’s Energy and Commerce.”

Committee Chair Glenn “GT” Thompson tells Brownfield…

“There’s no way I could put any provisions for E15 into the farm bill.”  He says, “The lawyers and the parliamentarians would point out very quickly it’s non-germane.”

While E15 isn’t included in his legislation, Thompson says he supports consumer choice.

“I think it’s important.”  He says, “I know there’s some mixed opinions, but mostly fairly positive on just the availability of year-round E15. You know, with a blender pump, you don’t have to buy it. It’s a choice that you could make year-round.”

Thompson says he’s optimistic that the Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026 can quickly move through committee and onto the House floor.

Brownfield spoke with Thompson at the Illinois Pork Producers annual meeting and Swine Mixer in Springfield.
