Will Prop 12 fix be part of “skinny” farm bill?

A congressional solution for Proposition 12 remains in limbo.

Compeer Financial vice president of legislative affairs Perry Aasness says the House-passed reconciliation bill does not include language addressing California’s livestock confinement law.

“The Prop 12 fix is a great example of those sorts of provisions that would normally be part of a farm bill that aren’t eligible for inclusion in budget reconciliation because it doesn’t deal with budget impacts.”

He tells Brownfield the House Ag Committee intends on passing a slimmed down version of the farm bill that would address issues like Prop 12.

“Going off of the chair of the House Ag Committee (GT Thompson) has stated in the last few days, and I believe the chair of the Senate Ag Committee, John Boozman, has said they want to get to another small farm bill after reconciliation.”

National Pork Producers Council president Duane Stateler says while the reconciliation bill includes necessary legislation to keep farms afloat during uncertain times, NPPC will keep pressure on Congress to pass a five-year farm bill that includes a fix to Proposition 12.
