Winter ag safety tips

An ag safety and health professor says farmers shouldn’t forget about their health in bitter cold temperatures.

Dee Jepsen with Ohio State University says there is an increased risk of injury from the cold.

“Having a change of clothing, a change of mittens, gloves and socks is important throughout the day,” she says.

She tells Brownfield farmers should also remember indoor safety measures.

“The livestock are now inside or were working in our shops,” she says. “A lot of times we’ll have our heaters running, so also thinking about venting the shop properly so that we don’t have a buildup of carbon monoxide.”

Jepsen says because farmers spend most of their time outdoors, there is an increased risk of hypothermia and frost bite.
