Winter weather brings added moisture for growers in SW Iowa, SE Nebraska, NW Missouri
Some areas of the Midwest received winter weather to start the week, and a climatologist says it could give growers a timely boost for the growing season.
Justin Glisan is the state climatologist for the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. He says sleet and snow fell in southwest Iowa, eastern Nebraska, and northwest Missouri.
“We had a quick clipper system come through,” Glisan said. “Looking at the snowfall totals, anywhere from three-to-five inches out there at several stations.”
He tells Brownfield, “Banking soil moisture this time of year is beneficial in that if we do dry out getting into the middle of the growing season, we do have a repository of water and moisture in the soil profile to work off of.”
Glisan says current models indicate higher chances for warmer conditions in late spring throughout most of the Corn Belt.
