Winter wheat planted area rises
U.S. farmers planted more winter wheat.
The USDA says all major types saw higher acreage on some expectations for improved export demand, along with continued solid domestic demand.
The total of 34.115 million acres was up 2% on the year, including a 1% rise for hard red winter wheat in the southern and central Plains to 24 million acres, a 6% jump for soft red winter in the Midwest and southeast at 6.44 million acres, and a 3% increase for white winter to 3.64 million acres, mostly in the western Plains.
The USDA’s latest round of winter wheat crop condition numbers were mixed, largely depending on soil moisture levels, but the big test will be conditions when the crop emerges from dormancy.
The U.S. produced 1.349 billion bushels of winter wheat in 2024.
