Wisconsin celebrates cranberry milestone during harvest

The cranberry harvest is in full swing. 

Wisconsin Cranberry Grower’s Association Executive Director Grant Holley tells Brownfield the recent warm days and now cooler weather has helped the berries. “The colder mornings and the colder nights that we’re having is going to help to get that color onto the berries, so even though that nice, warm week that we actually had really helped be able to plump them up, we now have some of these colder days that will bring out some of that pretty red.”

Holley says harvest is already about half finished. “Here in central Wisconsin, we probably still have a couple of weeks of harvest. A little bit closer to the northern parts of Wisconsin, they’re going to be going into November.”

Wisconsin’s Alice in Dairyland Hailey Heinzel presented a proclamation from Governor Tony Evers recognizing this week as Cranberry Growers Appreciation Week. “We are celebrating 20 years of the cranberry as our state fruit and 30 years of Wisconsin leading the nation in the production of cranberries.

The Governor’s proclamation celebrating cranberry growers was presented at Cutler Cranberry Company between Mather and Camp Douglas, Wisconsin.
